Booking a Fishing Boat Charter or Lake Cruise

Port Credit Harbour Marina - by Bob TobinPort Credit Harbour Marina - by Bob TobinWhat do you need to know before you charter a boat? What do you bring on board? What if you don't want to fish? Would $48K in prizes change your mind?

After living for 50 years near Lake Ontario, I finally discovered that it is possible to go out on it, even if you don’t own a boat. What’s more, you can go out on it with a fishing charter and not fish. While some would consider that crazy talk, I don’t like to fish, I have a tendency to get seasick and cool lake breezes just leave me cold.

But what I discovered after my husband won a six-hour boat cruise on Lake Ontario was that cruising around Lake Ontario on a yacht can be fun, and, while I still don’t want to fish, I can understand the allure for those who do – especially when we hooked what looked like the biggest fish of the derby less than an hour before we were to end our cruise. With a potential $48,000 in prizes up for grabs, it appeared we had some beginner’s luck on our side.

There are many reasons for chartering a boat and mostly these would depend on the group planning the trip. According to Ernie Izzi, owner of Izzi Charters in Port Credit Harbour Marina in Ontario, the groups that book his charters are mostly business owners doing team building or bringing sales teams or clients out for the day.

He also does birthday parties, couples retreats, and schedules cruises around special events such as the Canada Day fireworks display at nearby Ontario Place and the annual Great Ontario Salmon Derby. Lake Ontario also provides an optimal view of the Air Show during the Canadian National Exhibition.

However, if all you want to do is cruise around a lake without doing anything at all, a charter can accommodate that as well. It is possible to get packages of varying duration that include such things as Yoga on one of the Toronto Islands for those who don’t want to fish or spend all their time on the boat. Often, you can have meals catered on the boat, or you can bring your own picnic or potluck to keep costs down.

The end result is a spectacular day that you will never forget. Or it will be, as long as you plan it carefully.

According to Izzi, boats that take passengers out onto the lake for a fee are automatically considered commercial boats here in Ontario. He says, “There are regulations as far as taking people out who have paid you to take them out and captain the boat for them…To be operating a commercial vessel, you need a captain’s license, which is called a Master Limited. You would need a few other courses.”

The first thing you should verify, then, is that the charter you are looking at adheres to all government regulations. You can confirm this by checking with the operator what certifications they have and visiting the relevant government website to confirm the requirements. In Canada, this information would be found on the Transport Canada website, where they provide a Passenger Vessels FAQ page for people who are planning to book a charter.

Find out the cancellation policy in case you must cancel, or if the operator cancels the trip as a result of inclement weather conditions. Most operators will charge a cancellation fee if you back out, but won’t charge you if they cancel. Izzi says that in the latter instance, he will try to reschedule before he gives up and cancels the trip.

If you are interested in trying to win a fishing derby, consult with the operator on the best time to take out the boat. According to Izzi, if you are going to go after the “big one,” then the best time to leave is at 4:00 AM. An alternative is to stay out late. This is because the big fish tend to come out when it’s dark. Be sure to communicate with your operator so that he/she knows the exact purpose of your trip and can help optimize it for you.

The operator of your boat should take you through a safety briefing and alert you to the locations of life vests and safety equipment. Izzi took us through such a briefing at the very start of our trip, before we were even out of the harbour. The operator should also prepare an ice chest to store any fish caught and kept. According to Izzi, “the charter…should have lots of ice and make sure they use a cooler. Fish can turn bad in ten minutes.”

For those who know they are prone to seasickness, Izzi recommends taking something like Gravol at least an hour before getting on board. Once you are out there and feeling ill, it is too late to do anything about it. There are natural remedies available for help with seasickness as well. Consult your natural health care practitioner on what would work best for you.

Izzi keeps seasickness bracelets on board his boat, but says it is much better to avoid seasickness in the first place, than try to deal with it after you start feeling sick. He recommends making sure that you do not show up for your cruise with an empty stomach, nor one that is too full, as he has seen people get sick under both conditions. In my case, that seemed to work, because I didn't take any preventative measures other than making sure my stomach wasn't too full or too empty and I was fine.

Chartering a boat is a wonderful way to spend a sunny day, even for reluctant fisher-people. There are many things you can do on board that don’t involve fishing. However, the prize for the largest fish caught during the derby might just be enough to lure you into the sport. On our trip, it was reported to be $48,000 in prizes that included a Toyota truck.

If you decide to participate, make sure you know what you need to do to enter. Not only should you read the rules and regulations for your particular derby, but you also need to know if you have to purchase tickets separately from your charter. Izzi Charters automatically provides passengers with an entry ticket into the fishing derby with the price of the charter, but not all of the charters do this. Don’t assume.

If you happen to catch the big one, then you get the prize (or prizes), as long as you have an entry ticket. It is up to you if you want to give any reward to your captain and crew, though I hope you do. Also, determine ahead of time with your fellow passengers how you will divide up the winnings. Do only those who fish share in the prize? Do only those who help land that particular fish share in the prize? You wouldn’t want to lose friendships over a fish, no matter how many thousands of dollars might be involved.

UV rays from the sun reflect off the water and you need to protect your skin and your eyes from over-exposure to the sun. Bring hats, cover-ups and sunscreens. Izzi’s boat has a cover as well as a cabin where passengers can get out of the sun, but not all boats have such facilities.

Speaking of facilities, you might want to verify what type of washroom facility is available on that boat. On our tour, there was a bathroom with a flush toilet and I was grateful. Not all boats have that, but Izzi Charters has a 45-foot yacht with every comfort.

If you are bringing your own food, find out if you need to bring your own plates, cups, utensils and so forth. Our boat had a full kitchen, which included a refrigerator and everything we needed for our picnic, though we brought most of what we would need ourselves. Thermoses of coffee and hot water for tea are always nice to have, especially if it’s cool on the water that day. If you want to bring alcohol, discuss this with the operator, as liquor laws vary. In Ontario, commercial vessels need a liquor license to serve alcohol.

If you are planning to take home any fish that you catch, bring a cooler with ice to preserve them during the trip home. Izzi cleans and fillets the fish for his passengers, though not all operators will do that task.

Pollution reaches the waters of even the most remote lakes and Lake Ontario is anything but remote. While many of the fish caught in Lake Ontario are edible, it is important for anyone considering eating fish caught from any lake to make sure that it is safe to eat. This is especially critical for pregnant women and young children.

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment website offers an interactive guide to eating Ontario sport fish that is updated regularly. It is also available in electronic format, or you can order copies to be delivered through the mail using an online form. Check with your government’s environmental site to find information that pertains to your own region before consuming any fish you catch.

As fate would have it, our cruise was on the last day of the salmon derby. As the sun started to go down, one of our hooks snagged a big fish – the biggest we had seen that day. Ernie Izzi looked at it and said it was probably a Chinook salmon and, incidentally, a contender for the biggest fish of the derby. We had less than an hour before our cruise was to end. Izzi thought it would take longer than that to land it. We settled in for the battle between man and fish.

One of the guys in our group was doing whatever you’re supposed to do when you have a gigantic fish on your line while Izzi coached him, and the rest of us cheered him on and mentally claimed $48,000 in prizes...but it wasn’t to be. The fish managed to extricate himself from the hook and get away. It was over – for this year, anyway.

But we’re looking forward to doing it all again next year, and probably for many more years to come. The experience was exhilarating and fun, and something that everyone should try at least once. Just be sure to prepare for it, and choose a professional charter operator who adheres to all government regulations for your comfort and safety.

Sad Chapter is Written into Stories of the Race to Mackinac

Some of the Beneteau 36.7 yachts leaving Chicago in the Race to Mackinac - Chicago Yacht Club & Event MediaSome of the Beneteau 36.7 yachts leaving Chicago in the Race to Mackinac - Chicago Yacht Club & Event MediaThe rich and varied history of the classic Chicago-to-Mackinac sailboat race has been fatality-free, until the 2011 contest.

The 103rd Race to Mackinac is history now, and like all the preceding Mac races that have come and gone, the countless sagas and stories from the multitude that sail it, are the nuts and bolts of that history. Unfortunately, what is certain to be the most prominent story from the 103rd, is the one with the news no one ever wanted to hear.

By noon Monday, July 18, 2011, the Chicago Yacht Club had posted the sad, stark announcement on its homepage:

".. ..it is with great regret that the Chicago Yacht Club acknowledges the deaths of two sailors who were competing in the 2011 Chicago Yacht Club's Race to Mackinac.

"A severe thunderstorm crossed Lake Michigan around midnight EDT last night. Wind gusts were reported at 52 knots with waves of 4-6 feet. . . .Wingnuts had capsized in these severe conditions"

The loss of the skipper, Mark Morley, 51, and crew member Suzanne Bickel, 41, both of Saginaw, MI, occurred approximately 13 nautical miles northwest of Charlevoix, MI. Both were experienced Mac race sailors, the club said. Their boat, Wingnuts, was a Kiwi 35, competing in the Sportboat section.

The sense of dread and disappointment this news spread among Mac race watchers everywhere is captured perfectly in a lament for lost sailors at Bree’s Mackinac Island blog. The deaths of Morley and Bickel are unprecedented. Of the many thousands who have sailed this legendary Lake Michigan race – from the first contest between two sloops and three schooners in 1898 to the 300-plus competitors of contemporary times – no one had ever been lost to the lake before.

Intense storms are not infrequent on Lake Michigan, and boats – but not lives – have been lost. The seventh Chicago-to-Mackinac race occurred in 1911 (in the early years the race was held intermittently) in an 80-mph gale, and one boat was wrecked on the rocks of Fisherman’s Island, not far from today’s tragedy. In 1937, which went down in Mac race history as "the year of the Big Blow," only 8 boats out of a fleet of 42, finished.

More recently, according to the CYC’s history of the race, in 2002, "a cold front shifting northerly broke booms, dismasted one boat, capsized the 44-foot multihull Caliente …." But this year was different, as the vivid account portrayed by David Schmidt, editor at Sail-World USA, asserts.

Peter Wenzler, a co-skipper of the boat Fast Tango told Schmidt: "The wind had been coming down in vertical shafts …. It just never stopped …. There was more wind than I’ve ever experienced in 35 years of racing all over the Great Lakes, and on the oceans …. This thing was different."

Wenzler’s extensive remarks in the Sail-World interview are genuine eye-witness history. He estimated his boat had been within 5 miles of the Wingnuts, and speculated that conditions for the smaller boat must have been "far, far worse."

In stories of tragedy we often seek and find solace in the survivors – those who make it through the struggle – and in lessons to be learned, and heroic actions. The 2011 Mac race has those stories, too. Bill Emery of South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee, and his crew on Gungnir also sailed through the storm, and probably passed within miles of the distressed boat.

Reached by phone Tuesday, Emery said his crew was able to make some careful adjustments in their sailing, as they tracked the coming melee with weather radar. About half the boats in the race, he guessed, have similar access to weather radar. The storm system, he said, had a bow echo cloud formation associated with series of squalls and thunderstorms.

Emery also made note of the fact that for so many of the 300-plus boats in the race, lake conditions were entirely different. Many boats reached Mackinac Island in fast conditions ahead of the storm, and a good number were behind it, but there were dozens of boats whose fate intersected with it.

Six Lives Are Saved; Crew of Sociable Are Heroes

When Wingnuts capsized around midnight EST, Sunday night, two were lost, but 6 others with the boat were lucky enough to free themselves from the safety harnesses that tethered them to the boat and hang on in the stormy lake. A short distance away, Robert Arzbaecher of Milwaukee, and his crew on the sailboat, Sociable, thought they heard a whistle from the open water. Then they caught sight of a small, faint light, and began to steer towards it.

"A needle in the haystack," Azbaecher told a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter. Without "a light on the life jackets, we would never have seen that." The crew of the Sociable found five of the Wingnuts crew on top of the capsized boat, and a sixth crew member in the water. They retrieved all six and directed other boats, as they began to arrive, in the search for the missing two until the Coast Guard arrived. In an earlier edition of the Journal Sentinel, Captain Joe McGuiness, sector commander of the U.S. Coast Guard in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, praised the crew of the Sociable for saving these lives.

Drawing on his architectural background, Marvin provides clients with kitchens that have clean lines and the finest cabinetry matched to their particular taste.

Marvin, a graduate of Brookdale Community College in Lincroft where he earned an associate in applied science degree in Architectural Drafting and Design, worked for a Monmouth County architect, Samuel P. Abate, doing residential design for 15 years. While freelancing for the next 10 years he decided to specialize in kitchen design in 1998 and in 2004 founded Architectural Interiors. A showroom will be opening Holmdel,NJ in Fall 2011. He currently is offering in-home consultations and site visits.

Marvin works with three cabinet companies. They are:

Deborah James Coastal Kitchens, http://deborahjameskitchens.com, a nationwide company specializing in the manufacture of high-end design center quality kitchen cabinetry of unbeatable quality at unbeatable prices. A high-end manufacturer of estate quality cabinetry the likes of Christopher Peacock, Clive Christian, Siematic, Wm Ohs, Mark Wilkinson, Rutt, etc.

Mouser Custom Cabinetry, http://www.mousercc.com, another American maker, which offers traditional, contemporary, arts and craft, and country styles in a mid-range price bracket and;

Denla, a Canadian manufacturer http://www.denla.com, which offers European style cabinetry of frameless semi-custom design in the lower mid-range bracket.

To get a full understanding of what each client wants in the design of their new or remodeled kitchen, Marvin asks the client to fill out a seven page questionnaire and then sounds them out on it.

He then takes the measurements of the kitchen and all adjacent rooms. From that, he determines the basic floor plan showing any walls that meed to be removed and where any new openings, doors, or windows are required.

"I alter the space to fit the clients wish list", says Marvin.

Marvin then designs the kitchen layout using established industry quidelines for the desired distances in the triangle between the sink, range and refrigerator.

Marvin's strong point is working function into the design for the room. He also is careful to work within the budget set forth by the client.

The basic shapes that kitchens can take, according to marvin, are the galley, L-shaped, and U-shaped he noted.

Marvin does all sizes of kitchens, from small ones that are 10 feet by 10 feet, to a large one that's 20 feet by 20 feet or bigger. he said he can surprise people with what he can fit into a little kitchen. "You can stuff a lot into it", he said. Marvin said granite is no longer is the only material people want for countertops. He said many are going for a mixture of surfaces, such as granite and wood, or concrete, lava, engineered stone and glass. Because kitchens are being designed with different work zones, they can have different material surfaces in each zone., he said.

If you thought that luxury kitchen cabinets are only the priviledge of the rich, elite and celebrities you're mistaken. Kitchens are the busiest and most expensive room in the house. Kitchens are highly complex rooms that have to function on many levels. Everyone deserves a beautiful kitchen. That means you too!!!

The kitchen is one of the first things people remodel when they are looking to improve their home. New kitchen cabinets are one of the most popular luxury kitchen home improvements.

Many consumers think of the neighborhood Home Depot and Lowes when it comes to cabinetry. This, however, only gives you access to stock and semi-custom cabinetry.

Architectural Interiors (http://www.custom-kitchen-cabinet-design.com) offers custom made cabinetry just for your needs. All your cabinetry will be designed by Owner and Chief designer Marvin W. Towler. His 25 years in architectural drafting and design gives him an advantage when it comes to knocking down walls and redesigning spaces that require an expansion.

Architectural Interiors has factory-direct access to custom cabinetry from three manufacturers. These custom cabinets include european and traditional face frame style cabinets. These cabinet lines include high-end upgrades as standard features; such as six-way adjustable hinges, soft-close drawers, wood drawer boxes, dovetail joints and undermount full extension glides. A high quality furniture finish is provided in state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities.

Granite and marble can help to contribute to the beauty and function of your kitchen. On the other hand, many are going for a mixture of surfaces such as wood, concrete, lava, engineered stone and glass. Because kitchens are being designed with different work zones, they can have different materials for each zone.

Other popular additions include stainless steel appliances, including sub-zero refrigerators, built-in microwave oven and cooktops. Many people doing a luxury kitchen prefer a gas stove. Induction cooking and steam cooking have also become new favorites.

Luxury is desired by the American consumer who sees current trends and desires luxury products. In today's real estate market a remodel is the perfect solution to improve the lifestyle and financial position of homeowners and their families. Homeowners can enjoy a new lifestyle and reap the financial benefits of their investment.

Architectural Interiors is a cost effective solution for a designer kitchen complete with luxury kitchen cabinets. Architectural Interiors will help you plan the perfect kitchen. When you make a significant investment in your home you want your improvements to last. Fortunately, Architectural Interiors is an excellent resource for high-quality durable luxury cabinets which are fashionable and functonal.

Now they are taking that expertise in a new direction with TheArchitectsEDGe.com, a Web site, that provides the architectural community with the resources needed to make educated decisions about electronic systems.

Dave Randolph, Managing Director of Consulting for EDG, explained how market changes over the last few years helped develop the unique concept behind the site.

"As the market got more and more competative and the margins dropped, there were lots of customers that were asking for free proposals, he began, "and the industry would provide that, and in the end the client would often times never really make sense of what the product was."

Randolph explaines that a customer would be left with three different companies that would provide three different manufacturers, with three different philosophies. "In the end they'd end up with nothing, gamble and pick just one...a situation that wasn't really good for anybody," he added.

Randolph further explained that the site isn't about presenting a new set of speakers or showing pretty install pictures, "this is a design resource site for designers interested in developing AV systems. You can got to the site for any aspect of that system and our client can look at consulting solutions-example sysytems of different aspects of a project."

Randolph believes that EDG clients will embrace TheArchitectsEDGe and take advantage of all the tools the site has to offer.

Make Changes To Your Kitchen Door Handles

Suppose if you want to modify and give a facelift to the doors of your kitchen, then fitting new handles can be a good idea. It is easy and simple for changing the Kitchen Cabinet Handles.
All you need is wood filler and a screwdriver. Handles for kitchen cabinet come in different varieties in relation to shape, color, and style.
The best part is that for changing the handles of your kitchen doors, there is no need to do lot of search, as you can get them from any hardware store within your vicinity.
1. Before you leave your house for shopping, it is necessary to calculate the number of handles required for the cabinets in your kitchen, as many people forget this when they reach the hardware store.
2. Prices of cabinet handles may vary depending upon the quality, shape, and style. Suppose, you need to replace many handles, then you have to decide the handles, which will suit your budget.
3. You need to choose the cabinet handles appropriately, as there are many different kinds and styles of handles available in the market.
It is best to buy cabinet handles after you have checked with some of your neighboring hardware stores. Make sure that whichever design or color you are buying is of good quality.
4. If you have a camera, you can click pictures with the permission of the storeowner, as this will help you to recollect the designs that you have already seen and selected.
5. Carefully remove the old hardware securing your kitchen cabinet handle. Normally, a screwdriver is sufficient.
6. Once you have done with this, put all your old hardware into a plastic bag and preserve, as this can be useful in future. Therefore, store the handles, screws and other hardware in a zip bag.
7. Keep wood filler handy, as you may need it for filling the holes. You will need this especially when you drill in handles and knobs.
There are certain knobs that require only a single hole and single screw for proper fitting. However, handles need two holes and two screws, wherein you require wood filler for filling such holes followed by light sanding that is grit finely using sandpaper.
Finally, you can install the new knobs or handles to the cabinets of your kitchen. You need to lay attachment screws in the holes, which were previously holding old handles. Suppose, you are fitting knobs, then all you need to do is attach only one screw.
Next, fix the knob on the opposite side of the cabinets by fitting them with screws. Here, you will require a screwdriver for tightening the screws of your brand new kitchen cabinet handles and knobs.

Are You Considering New Kitchen Cabinets

The theme is normally decided by the wallpaper, paint color, accessories or decoration, pictures, etc.. For long lasting appreciation of your new kitchen let your taste decide for you unless you are imitating or copying a specific cabinet style or theme of a favorite decorator. One of the following cabinet styles can be used basically in any kitchen theme. Ones' home should be their get away, our sanctuary so to speak, from the busy, hectic outside world. Kitchen Cabinet Designs

People donג€™t often realize it, but kitchen cabinet doors can dramatically change the look and feel of your kitchen and add to the overall beauty. The quality of cabinets plays a major role in the way they will make your kitchen look. Cabinets of poor quality will make your kitchen look worn and unflattering, but quality cabinets can completely change that look. And itג€™s simple because all you have to do is change the kitchen cabinet doors to achieve your new look.

The first thing you should know about kitchen design is that cabinets can be made from a wide range of woods which include:

Oak
Maple
Pine
Cherry
Hickory
Poplar
Alder
Birch

Cherry, Birch and Maple are popular choices for cabinetry. If you are looking for a more affordable option, Alder and Poplar are great choices and also work well with glazed finishes. Pine is a soft wood that is also popular among many homeowners. Hickory and Oak are the heaviest of your choices. Keep in mind, particleboard and plywood is also used in the cabinet construction.

The style of the door is also important. The four main types of doors include inset, lipped, partial overlay and full overlay. There are five main types of cabinet door shapes which include flat slab, recessed panel, raised panel, beadboard panel and curved panel.

Common cabinet design styles include traditional, country, shaker and contemporary. Raised panel doors create a more traditional design. Full overlay doors create a more contemporary look.

When it comes time to purchase your new cabinets, there are three main types of kitchen cabinets to choose from. These include stock kitchen cabinets, semi-stock kitchen cabinets, and custom kitchen cabinets. Stock kitchen cabinets are limited in design options, but also very affordable. Custom kitchen cabinets allow you to get exactly what you want with a very high level of craftsmanship. However, be expected to pay for such customization. Semi-stock kitchen cabinets are a happy medium between stock and custom cabinets, offering a certain level of customization.

Cabinet construction types include framed and frameless. Framed cabinets consist of two components, the cabinet box and the face frame. These two components are assembled together. Frameless cabinets, also referred to as European-styled cabinets, consist of a box with no face frame. Frameless cabinets provide better accessibility and extra interior space.

The last thing to know about cabinet design includes the decorative pulls and knobs. Not only are knobs and pulls put in place for aesthetic purposes, they also protect the wood and finish of the cabinets. They are available to many shapes, sizes, and styles which include but are not limited to brushed chrome, plastic, ceramic, glass and iron.

Guide To Buying A Refrigeratorfreezer

When it comes to buying a new refrigerator, or refrigerator-freezer combination, there are a number of factors that need to be considered before you make your purchase. Factors that will, influence the best buy for you are in three broad categories:

The environment where the appliance is to be installed

The load you will place on the appliance

The total cost of owning and operating the appliance.

At Myshopping.com.au you can compare a great range of appliances, and assess them according to their specifications, brands, prices and vendors.

Fridges & Freezers

The environment

Most kitchens have a refrigerator, but not all are located in the kitchen. Before you make a decision about the appliance, you need to measure the space it will occupy. Make sure you measure the available width, height and depth, taking into account the space available for opening the refrigerator doors. Remember that fridges generate heat on the outside in order to cool the inside the cabinet, therefore there needs to be adequate space around the unit to allow the heat to dissipate. If it is to be enclosed within a cavity, be sure there is ventilation available through the top of the cavity. You can choose a refrigerator to be modelled to reflect and enhance the d׳™cor of the kitchen into which it is being installed.

There are a number of basic design differences that you can consider. Each different design has an impact on how it fits into your environment as well as other aspects of the unit.

Single compartment refrigerators

Single compartment refrigerators are units with only fresh food space and no freezer compartment. They are generally automatic defrost units.

Single door refrigerators

Single door refrigerators have a small freezer compartment built into the main cabinet. These are usually manual defrost and are often referred to as small bar refrigerators.

Cyclic defrost refrigerator/freezers

Cyclic defrost refrigerator/freezers are generally two door units in which the freezer unit is manually defrosted, but the fresh food compartment defrosts automatically using either natural warming of the cabinet during the 'off cycle', or a small electric heater on the refrigerator evaporator.

Frost-free refrigerators

Frost-free refrigerators are generally two door models that have automatic defrost in both the freezer and fresh food compartments. Well-designed frost-free refrigerators can have a lower energy use than cyclic defrost models of the same size

Vertical/Upright freezers

Vertical/Upright freezers are front-opening door freezers allowing contents to be accessed and loaded quickly, thus minimising the time that the door is open.

Chest freezers

Chest freezers have a top opening lid and are generally more economical than vertical freezers but less convenient to use, and are manual defrost.

Within the two-door category, units are available with top freezer compartments, bottom freezer compartments or as side-by-side units. Generally speaking, top of bottom door freezers are more energy efficient than side-by-side units, which are also limited in shelf-width space. Side-by-side fridges however, do offer some benefits in kitchens with limited space because the doors are not as wide as doors on top or bottom door freezer units. You can search Myshopping.com.au to compare the prices and performance specifications of these different model combinations.

The load

The load you place on the appliance affects how effective it is as a refrigerator, and how much it costs you in the long run. It all boils down to size. What capacity refrigerator should you buy? To answer that question, you need to consider what-and how much of it-you will put into it. So let's look at size first.

Small refrigerators are typically 200 litres to 280 litres, medium 280 litres to 400 litres, large from 400 litres to 560 litres and extra large from 560 litres to 800 litres. Depending on the lifestyle you lead and how often you shop for fresh foods, two people need around 220 litres to 280 litres of refrigerator capacity. For each additional person, add another 30 litres. A family of four therefore, should consider a refrigerator/freezer capacity of something in the order of 300 litres to 360 litres. You can search Myshopping.com.au for refrigerators of different capacities.

Getting the right size is important. If your fridge on average is not at least two thirds full, or your freezer at least three quarters full, it's probably too big for your needs. A refrigerator that's too big and not kept filled wastes energy and costs more to run. A fridge that's too small has you constantly rearranging food to make it all fit, which results in wastage of energy because of long periods the door is open and wasted time.

Also consider the load from the point of view of the shelving capacity of the unit. If you're simply stocking it with large quantities of packaged food, you may need only small crisper capacity. On the other hand if fresh vegetables and fruit are a large party of your pantry, then you need a unit with substantial crisper capacity. Shelf adjustments and strength are important. Flimsily constructed plastic shelving cannot withstand heavy loads, especially door shelving. You need also to be able to adjust shelving heights to suit the kinds of foods you are putting in the unit.

The less time a fridge door remains open, the less energy it will consume. Therefore a fridge/freezer with easy access is easier to stock, and easier to use things you need quickly. The temperature control is how you manage the load of your fridge. Make sure you know where the thermostat control is located and how it is adjusted, this will help you manage the load of the unit for efficient energy use and constant temperature.

Cost

Here are a couple of facts that you may not be aware of. A typical refrigerator uses between 600 and 900-kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which makes it the single most expensive appliance in many households, making up 20% or more of the total residential electricity consumption. Nearly all households have at least one refrigerator and about 30% own two. Nearly 60% of households own a separate freezer. So, it's not just the cost of the refrigerator that's important, it's also the cost of owning it.

The working life of most fridges is in the order of ten years. This is not to say that fridges can continue to work satisfactorily for longer, nor that some a poorly manufactured and give up the ghost after seven years. However a quick calculation of ten years of 20% of your household electricity consumption will soon tell you how much it will cost over its life. So how do you make a choice that will result in the lowest cost? Use the energy rating star system.

Every major refrigerator and freezer manufacturer has their goods tested by Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand and are regulated for energy labelling in Australia. They are also regulated for MEPS (minimum efficiency standards). The results of these tests are published and a label is attached to the product advising of that unit's performance. This performance rating is given a 'star' rating, which enables you to compare different energy consumption levels of different brands, capacities and types of refrigerator/freezers. You can use Myshopping.com.au to make this comparison very easily.

Summary

The following points are a quick summary of the things that will help you buy the right refrigerator/freezer for your situation. Use Myshopping.com.au to make comparisons between makes and models of specifications, energy ratings, price and vendors.

Generally, larger refrigerators consume more energy. A model that is too large will waste space and energy; too small could mean extra trips to supermarket and inconvenience, and inefficient use of the cabinet.

It is generally cheaper to run one large refrigerator than two small ones. However, a quick check of the energy consumption on the label will give you accurate comparison.

Top or bottom freezer units are generally more efficient than side-by-side units. You can check the stars and the energy consumption to compare.

Automatic ice-makers and through-the-door dispensers will increase both the energy use (typically 100 to 150 kilowatt hours/year) and the purchase price, but may add convenience and reduce energy wastage by not having the door opened as frequently.

Manual defrost models use less energy than frost-free models, but only if they are defrosted regularly enough to remain energy efficient.

If two different sized refrigerators use the same amount of energy, the larger model can be considered more efficient because it keeps more space cold with same amount of electricity.

Great Ways To Give Your Old Cabinets A New Look

Cupboards are everywhere, but regardless of their station, all cabinets serve one purpose: storage.

Some cabinets require less usage. A curio cabinet or trophy case is a good example of this particular cabinet. We put items in these cabinets that we want to look at on a regular basis, but we donג€™t tend to use these cabinets very often. We donג€™t open and close them very much. However, some cabinets see a lot of action. Kitchen and bathroom cabinets get lots of action. It doesnג€™t really matter what you have in your cabinets. What is important is to realize that sooner or later, you will have to make some minor repairs to keep your cabinets looking great.

Probably, the most expense way to restore old cabinets is to remove and replace. Be aware, though, that there are several issues to consider when buying new cabinets. Wood will obviously cost more than most other materials. However, it is usually more attractive and longer lasting. The overall design of the cabinets as well as the number of cabinets will also play a large factor in the price of the cabinets. As the artistry or architecture of the cabinet gets more complicated, the price rises. For example, a simple flat door design may cost as little as $40 per door, whereas a more complicated door with even a few etchings may be as much as $100 per door. Design matters when you are on a tight budget.

Refacing is another way to restore old cabinets without ג€œtearing down the houseג€. This process only involved the removal and replacement of the facing of the drawers and cabinets and does not involve removing any of the frame work. The cost for such a renovation is substantially lower than new cabinets, and the finished product is produced much quicker. Refacing can be performed in approximately three days, whereas complete replacement of cabinets can take as long as a couple of months. However, just as in replacement cabinetry, extricate design will cost more.

If your budget does not allow for the replacement or restoration of new cabinets, there are still things you can do to make your cabinets look new again. New knobs and drawer pulls are relatively inexpensive and can make a world of difference in the overall look and feel of the cabinetry. If you donג€™t get quite the look you were after, try also replacing the hinges. New hinges will also make your cabinet doors look better and brighter.

For a little more money, try painting or refinishing your wooden cabinets. You donג€™t have to remove all the old paint or stain before repainting or staining. You can sand the cabinets and drawers (everything that can be seen) just enough for paint or stain to stick to it. (Read the directions carefully if you choose to restain. Staining may require extra preparation.) If you are painting, be sure to you a primer before applying the final coat of paint. This will ensure that the paint will adhere to the cabinetry.

Kitchen Cabinets Design Making Your House Look Anew

Keeping your house looking decent even if it has been around for quite some time is a must. For instance, if your house has cracks and paint is already fading, you should somehow take the time and the effort to repaint it and fix it. This is also the same for your furniture. If you have no money to replace them, you can either polish it or repaint it. Keeping your house fresh and alive will certainly give you a lot of points when you have guests that will come over.
When it comes to kitchen pantry cabinets, you should also keep it looking fresh and new. How would you do this? You really do not have to buy a new set of cabinets and have it installed. What you can simply do is give it a little jumpstart. Download kitchen cabinets design through the internet. This will be able to help you in terms of vamping up your kitchen. There are many kitchen cabinets pictures that will surely inspire you and give you an idea on what to do with your kitchen cabinets.

When you are looking for kitchen cabinets designs, make sure that the ones you will choose would be in tune with the theme of your kitchen. There is of course an original theme to your house or your kitchen and it is important for you to stick to it. You wouldn't want your cabinets to look out of place in the kitchen, would you? For instance, you have a cottage theme home; choose the designs that will best reflect that theme. Do not go for those cabinets that will make your house look too modern especially if you have a cottage or country themed kitchen. Stick to one theme and make everything else cohesive.
Once you have chosen which design or plan you will have for your kitchen cabinets, make sure that you measure the cabinets properly. This will be one of the things that the instructions or manual for the plan will indicate. You must follow the steps thoroughly and precisely or else you will have to start over again or worse, you will ruin your whole cabinet. You should also keep into consideration the tools that you will be using so you don't have to use tools that are inappropriate or will just take too much of your time to use.
If you are not big on designing, you can simply purchase new cabinets. For a cheaper budget, choose the ready to assemble cabinets. These cabinets are less expensive than the ones that you can buy directly in the stores simply because you have to do-it-yourself. It will take you a little time to assemble the cabinet but once you have someone to help you or you get the hang of it, you will ask yourself why you never purchased this type of cabinet before.
It is really up to you and your skills which ones to choose. The most important thing is that whether old or new, it has to function and look well too.

Kitchen Organizers - A Recipe For Success

We spend hours upon hours in our kitchens wiping up countless meals for our friends, families and selves. Here is a recipe for kitchen organization using handy kitchen organizers that is truly worth preparing.

Step 1: As with any good recipe, preparation is integral. Gather your ingredients by surveying your kitchen and noting the real problem areas. Do you have a hard time keeping the countertops uncluttered or are your drawers overrun with junk? Are your cans of beans and bags of pasta huddled in your pantry, drawing straws over who should hand over the mutiny notice? Maybe the back of that oversized pots and pan cupboard (that seemed like such a great idea in the planning stages) hasn't seen the light of day since it was installed. Don't worry if ALL of these are your problem areas. With a few well-placed kitchen cabinet organizers, your kitchen souffl׳™ will be a mouthwatering success.

Step 2: The next step is to add in each ingredient slowly until you've reached your desired consistency. While this recipe is truly tailor-made for each kitchen, here are a few suggestions.

- Add a dash of drawer dividers. Drawer dividers take large, open drawer spaces, and separate them into smaller, more usable sections.

- Pour in liberal amount of pantry shelving. Pantry shelving is the solution to those mutinous cans and boxes mentioned earlier. With ample shelf and basket space, you can truly find a place for everything, and keep it there. Pantry shelving systems are also great kitchen organizers because they allow you to see the entire contents of your pantry at one glance. This makes shopping trips easier, more efficient and more cost effective.

- Add a heaping portion of blind corner cabinets, pull out shelves and lazy Susans. Not only will these keep your pots and pans inventory in check, but it will also enable you to use those previously out of reach pieces of kitchen equipment.

- And of course, season to taste. And, as with every good recipe, there should be at least a taste of something sweet. The styles, finishes and details that many of these kitchen organizers are available in will tempt the finest d׳™cor palette. From shabby chic wicker baskets to rich wood and contemporary chrome, kitchen cabinet organizers are in the market for taste as well as function.

Step 3: Let's not forget the icing on the cake (or cherry at the top, whichever you prefer). These can be an appliance lift, bread drawer sealer for ultra freshness and extended drawer life, decorative shelving, or even color coordinated recycling bins. Whatever suits your fancy.

Remember that kitchen organizers are keeping your kitchen, your home and your life in order. So don't let Miss Frugality (a.k.a. Spinster Cheapskate) talk you out of some well-deserved sanity.

Kitchen Cabinets Are The Starting Point

There are many factors that affect the cost of new kitchen cabinets. These factors include brand, construction, wood type, and features. There are a lot of bells and whistles available, but do you need them? It is important to research and explore all available options and choose what best fits your needs and budget. A higher price does not always mean better quality. Consider whether you are paying for a recognizable brand or the quality of the construction. As a cabinet wholesaler and supplier, Cabinet Giant researches manufacturers and is able to offer you not only a large variety of quality brands, but we and just as much knowledge about those brands. Advance research is critical before settling on final design.

When purchasing kitchen cabinets be sure that the features you need are included in the price of the unit. Kitchen cabinets can consume up to 80% of a kitchen remodeling budget. Itג€™s important to stick to your original style decision and not get caught up in fancy extras that blow your budget. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while shopping for cabinets.

Discounted Cabinets ג€“ Beware of perceived bargains that can actually cost you more in the long run. Discounted cabinets are often made of simulated wood grain, thin laminates, low-quality or mismatched woods, imperfections, and poor craftsmanship. The best kitchen cabinets are made with solid frames, doors, and drawers. They also have closed backs, with reinforced corners. These cabinets have higher end mechanical hardware to ensure the doors and drawers do not fail with heavy use for many years.

Design Changes ג€“ Avoid making even minor changes to design, style, and size. These changes tend to cause a ripple effect; impacting other kitchen elements and causing dramatic increases in the project budget.
Finishes ג€“ Select a kitchen cabinet finish that is environmentally friendly and does not contain formaldehyde or other carcinogens.
Kitchen Countertops ג€“ Be sure that the kitchen cabinet design you choose supports the weight, style and installation of the countertops that will be placed on them.

With advance thought and careful planning, a kitchen remodel can be a very smart investment for your home. Follow these basic guidelines and you will create a living space that you will enjoy for many years.

Why Use Pantry Cabinets

To store canned foods, plates, and miscellaneous ingredients, many people today resort to using their regular kitchen cabinets. However, there exist such things as pantry cabinets; they help you get more organized in the kitchen by allowing you to store the afore-mentioned items in a different place and to free up some cabinetry space. Not only that, but these cabinets are also fashionable and can serve as a decorative piece by themselves. The reasoning behind the purchase of a pantry cabinet for most people can be resumed by the fact that they allow you to save up some space, get organized, and will in fact allow you to save money. Thing about it this way: with more storage space, you'll be able to stow away more resources, which in turn signifies that you can now buy items in bulk, which is a price-saving practice. But with all the extra storage space, one can't help but wonder if accessing the different items in there can become a challenge. You'll be pleased to know that this aspect has already been taken care of with either shallow pantry shelves (allowing you to see everything), or moveable shelves. There are mainly two types of moveable shelves: the first type works exactly like a drawer, allowing you to pull and push the shelf in and out, providing rapid access to whatever you need wherever it is. The second type is found in pantry cabinets built in such a way as to allow the shelves to rotate in a full circle. The other reason people are get attracted by pantry cabinets, is how they complement the kitchen. Choosing the pantry made out of the right materials with a design matching the rest of your kitchen will go a very long way to creating the atmosphere you've always wanted to have. Luckily, pantry cabinetry is available in a plethora of styles, colors and materials, which insures that there will be something for every kitchen out there.

How Much Is Your Home Worth Ask Your San Diego Realtor!

As you prepare to sell your home, the main question on your mind is ג€œHow much is my home worth?ג€ Your San Diego realtor can assist you much better than the web sites on the Internet with their ג€œhome worthג€ calculators or even the price being asked by a close neighbor.

Your realtor takes many factors into consideration when determining the asking price for a home. Here are the major factors your realtor will evaluate:

ג€¢ Type of Residence. The type of home you are selling will make a difference in the pricing. Is it a primary residence, secondary, vacation home, or rental? How it has been used in the past could impact how your realtor markets your property or how potential buyers will use it.
ג€¢ Type of Property. The value will differ, depending if the property is a single family home, multiple family home, townhouse, condominium, manufactured or modular home, or a mobile home.
ג€¢ Size of the Property. Is the size of the land a city lot, a ֲ½ acre, full acre, or several acres? The more land, the higher the value. The position of the property makes a difference in the value. For example, a corner lot can bring in a higher selling price than one in the middle of a block.
ג€¢ Square Footage. The approximate square footage of your home is factored in; otherwise, how much living space is there?
ג€¢ Overall Condition. Your realtor will assess the condition of your home and property, which will greatly affect your selling price. The realtor also will make improvement suggestions that can increase the value of your property.
ג€¢ Architectural Style. If you home was built in a style that is in great demand, the selling price will be higher than if built in an outdated style that is not in demand.
ג€¢ How Old Is the Home? How long ago your home was built can affect its value.
ג€¢ The Numbers. How many fireplaces are there? The number of bedrooms and bathrooms (including half baths) also can raise or lower the homeג€™s value.
ג€¢ Parking Facilities. Garage, carport, off street parking, parking on the street, or a combination of these is an essential feature for buyers. Your realtor will evaluate how many cars will the available parking accommodate?
ג€¢ Type of Heating and Cooling. How is the home heated ג€” electric, natural gas, oil or propane? What type of air conditioning does it have? What is the quality and condition of the units, how old are they, and what type of maintenance has been done in the past?
ג€¢ Basement. Whether there is only a crawl space versus a basement affects your selling price. Other features your realtor will evaluate is a partial versus a full basement, and whether it is unfinished, finished or partially finished.
ג€¢ Other Home Features. Some other features your realtor will look for are a den or study, the amount of closet and storage space, the amount of kitchen cabinet and pantry space, and whether there is a pool, a guest house, and tennis court.

It is important to note that your realtor is viewing your home objectively. He or she is not tied up in the emotional attachments you have to your home, but rather looking at it from the perspective of the potential buyer. Additionally, some of those pricey improvements you made may not translate to a higher selling price. Many such improvement costs are rarely recouped from the sell of the home.

The Housing Market

After assessing your property, your realtor will take a closer look at your neighborhood and what its location has to offer. For instance, if there has been any bad publicity in your area, the value of your home may drop, especially if the publicity concerns a serious crime. On the other hand, if your home is located near some truly great schools with high scholastic achievements ratings, your home value could improve, as well as give you a great marketing edge.

Lastly, your realtor will assess the current housing market for your area. It used to be that you could locate a similar home in your neighborhood that had sold recently, add a ten percent increase, and you had your selling price. Home prices in the San Diego area, as well as in 75 other metro areas in the nation, have skyrocketed and are now on a slow decline, which makes for a volatile housing market. A poorly priced home means it could sit on the market overly long, ensuring you will have a difficult time selling it at all. Thus, it is even more important at this time to use an experienced realtor.

Ultimately, the buyer determines the actual selling price; however, an experienced realtor can ensure that you get the best price for your property and the fastest sale possible.

Install Kitchen Cabinets - You Can Install Your Own Dream Kitchen

If you are searching for information on how to install kitchen cabinets, you are probably frustrated with the limited amount of information available to you.

In order for you to fully grasp the know-how of installing kitchen cabinets, you need a step by step guide to bring you through the process from the beginning to the end. Videos only show you so much, and are you really getting the idea anyway.

Installing kitchen cabinets by yourself can seem to be a daunting task, especially if you have very little experience or knowledge of the process. However, if you have a guide or handbook that you can refer to and follow step by step, then it is going to be much easier for you to understand the installation process.

A guide the will show you from the very beginning how to install cabinets, from laying out the plans on the walls to making sure that evrything is in place before you start. A guide that will give you detailed pictures and diagrams for each step along the way. Simply watching a short video clip on the computer is not going to really help you all that much.

Do those videos show you how to layout the design or show you what to do when you have out of level ceilings and the cabinets are to be installed against the ceiling. Do they explain how to frame for peninsula base and wall cabinets. Are they going to explain to you what to do if your walls are out of plumb and you need to scribe a filler. No, they show you how to screw a cabinet against a perfectly level and flat wall, and in all reality, that very rarely is the case.

If you had access to a guide that will tell you exactly what to do in all of the mentioned instances plus many more, that would be great. And even better would be a guide that would give you access to a professional for support. Having the advice of someone that has years of experience installing kitchen cabinets and kitchen remodeling in general would be invaluable.

You see, there is a lot more to installing a kitchen than what anyone actually realizes. It is more than just drawing lines on the walls and screwing the cabinets in place. A lot more. Those videos that you have seen hardly touch the surface of installing kitchen cabinets, and do not even venture into other parts of the kitchen remodeling process such as appliances, countertops, flooring and other factors that will come into play during any kitchen remodel project.

If you are truly serious about installing your own kitchen, then I commend you. You are going to save yourself a lot of money, but you need to make sure that you avoid those commonly costly mistakes that homeowners usually make when doing it on their own. If only you had something like I just explained, you would be able to install your kitchen with

confidence and with the support of a professional. But really, is there actually anything like that out there.

Saving Money With Kitchen Cabinet Refacing

Want to remodel your kitchen but think I would be to costly? Then consider kitchen cabinet refacing.
The cost of kitchen cabinet refacing is considerably less than the cost of completely gutting your kitchen and in a much shorter time period.

Kitchen cabinet refacing can be a terrific option to consider if you want a whole new look to your kitchen without breaking your budget. Kitchen cabinet refacing usually includes covering the exterior surface of your existing cabinets with a new laminate. The old doors and drawer fronts are then replaced with new custom-made doors and drawer fronts. The types of cabinet front choices are laminate and solid wood.

Most homeowners intend to keep the layout of their kitchen the same particularly if the kitchen is well designed, well built and functional. So there is really no reason to tear the cabinets out. A new kitchen project can leave your kitchen unusable for a long as six weeks.

Kitchen cabinet refacing can range from simply repainting existing cabinets and drawer fronts and updating hardware to stripping cabinet doors and applying veneer or other decorative elements. Refacing can also include completely replacing cabinet doors in a new style using new materials.

By remodeling a kitchen you should expect to see a return on your initial investment of from 75 to 130 percent. You should find that depending on how old they are the existing cabinets are often of better quality construction than those made by today's standards. That is especially true or the quality sturdier cabinets you will find in vintage homes.

You can save a substantial amount by updating your existing cabinets since they are already installed, leveled, finished, and operational.

By going with a kitchen cabinet refacing instead of replacing the cabinetry you will actually be getting all the advantages of a major custom remodeling job at a much more affordable price.

Since new kitchen cabinetry can be expensive, kitchen cabinet refacing can be a viable alternative since it can save you anywhere from 33-60% off the cost of putting in new kitchen cabinets. The cost of kitchen cabinet refacing will depend on the number of cabinets, the cabinet veneer and the hardware choices (hinges door knobs, etc.). The average cost of kitchen cabinet refacing can run about $7,500.

Some other advantage of kitchen cabinet refacing includes: the work can be done in a very short time (a day or two). It is a more affordable and faster way of achieving a new fresh look for your kitchen than a complete remodeling job. Provides the kitchen with a whole new and fresh appearance. It also increases the home's value.

Also with new kitchen cabinet hardware added to your kitchen cabinet refacing job will the newly refaced cupboards look like brand new custom built cabinets including better functionality with the intallation of roll-out shelves, better drawer slides and storage.

In most kitchens the cabinetry provides the most visible area and therefore greatly influences the style and design of the kitchen. If the cabinets are dark the kitchen will feel darker. If the cabinets are scuffed and old looking this will make the kitchen look older and outdated. Kitchen cabinet refacing can do a lot to improve the look of the kitchen. Since only the outside surface of the cabinets are replaced
the work can be done in less time and at considerably less expense.

While freelancing for the next 10 years he decided to specialize in kitchen design in 1998 and in 2004 founded Architectural Kitchenworks, which is located on Route 35 in Eatontown, by Fort Monmouth. A showroom will be opening at this location in Summer 2008.

Mouser Custom Cabinetry, http://www.mousercc.com, another American maker, which offers traditional, contemporary, arts and craft, and country styles in a mid-range price bracket and;
